An ectopic pregnancy <strong>cannot develop or result in a child at term<\/strong>. It must be terminated, whether spontaneously, medically, or surgically. An EP <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">also <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">poses <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>a danger to the pregnant woman&#8217;s health and must be treated promptly<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Risk factors for an ectopic pregnancy<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even though <strong>its origin is not always determined<\/strong>, an ectopic pregnancy <strong>can be favored by certain factors<\/strong>. The main ones are divided into two broad categories.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">History of upper genital infections<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Upper genital infections<\/strong> (caused by bacteria such as chlamydia, gonococcus, or mycoplasma) <strong>can affect the fallopian tubes<\/strong>, particularly by reducing their mobility. The tube through which the fertilized egg passes will then have more difficulty &#8220;pushing&#8221; it towards the uterine cavity. <strong>The egg is then more likely to implant directly in the tube<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Good to know: <strong>yeast infections are not upper but lower genital infections<\/strong> \u2013 they do not expose one to this type of risk!<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Smoking<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You probably already know that <strong>smoking is strongly discouraged during pregnancy<\/strong>: the same applies during the preconception period. Indeed, smoking affects the tiny cilia inside the tubes, which help transport the egg to the uterus. Therefore, <strong>it is possible to have an EP even with an IUD<\/strong>. Does it cause <strong>specific symptoms<\/strong>?<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Symptoms of EP<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The symptoms of an ectopic pregnancy can be <strong>particularly difficult to establish<\/strong> as they are often identical to the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">signs of early pregnancy<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Sometimes, an EP is completely <strong>asymptomatic<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nevertheless, <strong>one may observe randomly and depending on the woman<\/strong>:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> <strong>abdominal pain<\/strong> that can be either diffuse throughout the lower abdomen or localized (lower right or lower left),<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> <strong>bleeding<\/strong>, which can be brown or blackish. <strong>The amount varies<\/strong> among women.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Good to know: <strong>any bleeding during pregnancy is not necessarily indicative of an EP<\/strong>; however, they <strong>should automatically lead to a medical consultation<\/strong> to ensure everything is fine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also note that an <strong>ectopic pregnancy can lead to a major complication: rupture of the tube<\/strong>. This is an <strong>internal hemorrhage<\/strong>, manifested by a <strong>fainting spell<\/strong> (with or without loss of consciousness), <strong>severe abdominal pain<\/strong>, <strong>vomiting<\/strong>, <strong>radiating shoulder pain<\/strong>&#8230; If you notice these symptoms, <strong>go immediately to the gynecological emergency room; it is a life-threatening emergency<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to distinguish an EP from another pathology?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Due to its symptoms, sometimes difficult to identify, <strong>it may be challenging to distinguish an EP from another pregnancy complication<\/strong> such as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">miscarriage<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (now more commonly referred to as pregnancy loss). As a result, doctors often speak of a <strong>suspected ectopic pregnancy<\/strong>\u2014<strong>without full certainty<\/strong>. Three scenarios are possible following the ultrasound:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Pregnancy is seen in the tube<\/strong>: the diagnosis of ectopic pregnancy is confirmed. For this, the gestational sac must be large enough to be visible on the ultrasound. This is referred to as a lateral uterine mass (a medical term for a pregnancy developing in the tube).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Pregnancy is seen in the uterus<\/strong>: the diagnosis of ectopic pregnancy is ruled out when the ultrasound shows the presence of a gestational sac with a yolk sac inside (a small white circle that will become the embryo) in the uterus. This is the only way to exclude an ectopic pregnancy.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>The location of the pregnancy is not yet visible on ultrasound<\/strong>: don\u2019t panic! If there are no signs of ectopic pregnancy or intrauterine pregnancy but beta-hCG levels are positive, the pregnancy is called a <strong>pregnancy of unknown location (PUL)<\/strong>. If there are no alarming clinical signs, the patient will be monitored every 48 hours with hormone level checks.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>In cases of ectopic pregnancy, beta-hCG levels<\/strong> (a hormone secreted only during pregnancy) <strong>tend to rise very slowly or stagnate<\/strong> instead of gradually increasing (they normally double every 48 hours in a typical pregnancy). <strong>For reliable results, beta-hCG levels should always be tested in the same laboratory.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Good to know: <strong>for women with a history of ectopic pregnancy, an early ultrasound is recommended<\/strong> (around 6\u20137 weeks of amenorrhea) to check the location of the pregnancy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Want to learn more? Here are <strong>the options your healthcare professionals may offer you<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is It Possible to Carry an Ectopic Pregnancy to Term?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>An ectopic pregnancy cannot and should not be carried to term because it poses a danger to the pregnant woman\u2019s health<\/strong>. Once the diagnosis is made, your medical team will guide you toward <strong>the best way to terminate the pregnancy<\/strong>. This may involve <strong>medical treatment<\/strong> or <strong>surgical intervention<\/strong> (under anesthesia).<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Methotrexate Injection<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Ectopic pregnancy is a serious complication of pregnancy<\/strong> that requires <strong>prompt medical intervention<\/strong>. Although <strong>it\u2019s possible for it to resolve on its own<\/strong>, most of the time, <strong>medical intervention<\/strong> is still necessary.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the ectopic pregnancy is located in the tube, your beta-hCG levels are stagnant (or low), and you have no clinical signs of severity (such as feeling faint or severe pain): <strong>your healthcare professionals may suggest a methotrexate injection<\/strong>. This is a <strong>medication that destroys pregnancy cells from within<\/strong> (therefore, no expulsion of the egg).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Please note that <strong>you will be closely monitored in the following days with multiple check-ups to track your beta-hCG levels<\/strong> (which should drop significantly after one week) <strong>or to detect any signs of complications<\/strong>. Also, <strong>the risk of tube rupture is not entirely ruled out until your beta-hCG levels reach zero<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Surgical Interventions<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Surgical treatment<\/strong> for an ectopic pregnancy is <strong>recommended if<\/strong>:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>you cannot commit to close and regular monitoring<\/strong> in the case of a methotrexate injection,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>your clinical condition is too severe<\/strong> (severe pain or a drop in blood pressure, for example),<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or if <strong>the tube has ruptured<\/strong>.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depending on your case, <strong>different options<\/strong> will be offered:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Laparoscopy<\/strong>: this is the most common surgical procedure for ectopic pregnancy.
